North or Black Sea?

You may not believe it, but the decision whether a raindrop ends up in the North or in the Black Sea is taken at the Hochtannberg pass, at 1,676m above sea level and near the German border. Because the Hochtannberg pass in the Bregenz Forest is part of the European watershed between the Danube and the Rhine, between the Black and the North Sea and separates the Allgäuer Alps from the Lechquell Mountains.

When walking along the Walser-Wasser-Weg footpath, you’ll learn more about the significance of water for this region. The easy hiking tour starts at the Landsteg in Schröcken, then leads along the Bregenzerache river, which rises in the Auenfeld and disembogues in the Rhine, to the Felle alp and then to the glacial mill. After crossing the Bregenzerache river, the path leads to the Körbersee and then to the Kalbelesee lake at the Hochtannberg pass.
